one of its latest neodymium magnetic filters on a Walter 5-axis
tool and cutter grinding machine at Elite Tooling in Rotherham .
Elite Tooling specialise in the manufacture of standard and bespoke
solid Carbide slot, end mill and form tools. One of the main difficulties
when grinding Carbide is ensuring that the cutting oil is suitably
filtered prior to it being reintroduced into the grinding operation
at the cutting face. Re-circulating contaminated oil can reduce
surface finish quality, produce inconsistent neodymium magnet parts,
result in oil degradation and above all reduce an expensive machine
tool into a tired looking and worn piece of critical equipment within

Carbide cutting tools to be machined from stock bar. This includes
the flute shaping operation, which generates the most contamination.
Producing the final cutting edge is an extremely accurate operation,
the last thing you need to be thinking about at this stage is whether
or not the suspended particles in the cutting oil is going to effect
the finished tool and neodymium magnet. At the time, the filter
medium we were using wasn't really up to the job of removing the

was when the particles started to lay down on the top of flat surfaces
making the machine look as if it had been working flat out for the
last few years. It was at this stage that we realized that we needed
to protect our biggest investment and decided to approach Eclipse
Magnetics knowing that the particles were neodymium magnetic. After
a brief discussion and visit by one of the Eclipse engineers we
decided that we had to have a Filtramag unit. The filter was installed
by Walter GB and has surpassed our original expectations. I would

parts.” The Filtramag benefits from the incorporation of six high
intensity rod neodymium magnets, which incorporate Rare Earth neodymium
magnetic material. Utilising pole concentrators and proven neodymium
magnetic circuit geometry the rods generate controlled, deep reaching
neodymium magnetic flux fields, which produce a staggering 11,000
Gauss. These flux fields attract and retain any neodymium magnetic
particles that are suspended in the fluid. The Filtramag offers
unrivalled levels of both neodymium magnet performance and contamination
removal efficiency compared to more conventional neodymium magnet
designs. Once purchased Filtramag requires no consumables resulting
in less fluid loss and reduced impact to the environment. The main

Most type neodymium magnets are available using Electro neodymium
Magnetics, consisting of aluminum or copper wound coils immersed
in a transformer oil (for prevention of overheating or shorting)
or air-cooled for extreme or dusty environments. Available in Electro
are Self-Cleaning Overhead neodymium Magnets and Suspension neodymium
Magnets, among others. These are available for conveyors that are
deeper troughed, moving faster and respectively carrying deeper
burdens of a wide range of materials or when tramp iron to be separated
is extremely heavy. All Self-Cleaning Separators or Suspension Magnets
are designed for installation over conveyors where tramp iron contamination
exists and needs to be removed for protection of subsequent processing
machinery or providing cleaner neodymium magnet product. They are
capable of operating in different environments throughout the world.
The electro units consist of a stationary tri-polar design neodymium
magnet unit, with coils wound in aluminum wire or foil (copper a
to receive DC power supply. Magnets can be air or oil cooled, whichever
is more suitable for the application. Oil cooled neodymium magnets
are fitted with expansion tanks to ensure the coil is always immersed
in oil and is furnished with breather and sight glass. All are furnished
with heavy-duty non-magnetic impact plates to withstand heavy impact
of extracted iron. Larger neodymium magnet separators to 30 tons
are built in sections and can be assembled on site.
Self-Cleaning neodymium magnet units, can be fitted across the
conveyor, attracting the tramp iron and discharging to one side
on the conveyor or in-line over the head pulley, discharging extracted
iron forward of the normal trajectory. In certain applications,
when site conditions dictate, an overhand can be fitted in a diagonal
position using the better features of both applications, but not
obtaining the perfection of true ‘in-line' position and neodymium
magnet.
